Read Chapter 4: Formative Assessment (pp. 79-110). This chapter delves into the nuts and bolts of formative assessment, including formative assessment examples and how feedback is an integral part of formative assessment.

Afflerbach, P. (2018). Understanding and using reading assessment, K-12 (3rd ed.). ASCD.
Read Chapter 8: Formative and Assessment Assessment (pp. 216-229). This chapter provides an excellent comparison and contrast between formative and summative assessment, including how both are used in reading classrooms. The author touches on how they can overlap and how they can effectively assess student learning.

This short article gets into the characteristics of formative vs. summative assessments, including a nice chart to show the differences visually. It also describes several different types of assessments and how they can be employed in the classroom.

Brookhart, S. M. (2016). How to make decisions with different kinds of student assessment data. ASCD.
Read Chapter 3: Interim/Benchmark Assessments and Common Formative Assessments (pp. 46-62) and Chapter 5: Classroom Formative Assessment Strategies (pp. 78-88). Chapter 3 discusses how to use formative assessments for interim/benchmarking activities. Chapter 5 summarizes formative assessment methods, including examples of how different schools use these assessments to improve teaching and learning.
