Harrison and Thompson, in Chapter 4, “Analysis of the Organization and Its Stakeholders,” provide an overview of the organizational structure and how different facets of the structure relate to and depend on each other. Thus, the authors provide an analysis of the internal environment of healthcare organizations and graphically illustrate the primary and support activities of an organization. Using the graphic depiction of organizational structure, Harrison and Thompson also show the relationship of stakeholders to the organization, both internal and external.
In Chapter 5, “Analysis of the External Environment,” Harrison and Thompson look at the external healthcare organizational environment and provide strategies for healthcare administrators to assess a) the local socioeconomic status of their service areas, b) the impact of regulatory constraints, and c) the competition.
In Chapter 6, “Strategic Factors and Performance Measures,” Harrison and Thompson examine the healthcare organization from the patient perception satisfaction by combining the review of the organizational structure, and the internal and external factors affecting the organization. Through this lens, the authors provide strategies for healthcare administrators to assess and improve organizational performance.
