Addictions Counseling Today: Update:  Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Alderson, K. G. (2019). Addictions counseling today. SAGE Publications, Inc.

In Chapter 7, Alderson summarizes the types of groups, basics of group dynamics, stages in group work, limitations of group counseling, and practical suggestions for forming and leading a group.  He also describes two popular couples counseling and three family counseling approaches with substantial empirical support and others that have minimal empirical support with addictions.  He provides an excellent summary and comparison of mutual support groups popular in addiction treatment and recovery processes. Chapter 7 also provides some helpful tools in the appendices dealing with the needs and wants of each partner in a relationship, conflict resolution, and the common mistakes made by couples and family counselors.
