Salm et al (2021) conducted a systematic review of 78 publications on the definitions of global health published between 2009 and 2019 to offer insights into establishing a common definition. The review identified four theoretical categories and associated subthemes that delineated key aspects of global health: (1) multiplex approach to worldwide health improvement; (2) ethically oriented initiative guided by justice principles; (3) mode of governance yielding influence across borders; and (4) a vague yet versatile concept with multiple meanings and historical antecedents. The study recommends future contributions shift towards pragmatic and reflexive questions about who defines global health and towards what ends.
