Craun et al. (2014) discuss one significant challenge that law enforcement can experience when working with victims of violence. Specifically, secondary traumatic stress (STS) impacts first responders due to exposure to potentially traumatic events. This article details risk and protective factors related to developing STS through law enforcement work.

Hohl, K., Johnson, K., & Molisso, S. (2022). A procedural justice theory approach to police engagement with victim-survivors of rape and sexual assault: Initial findings of the ‘Project Bluestone’ pilot study. International Criminology, 253 - 261.
This article discusses victims and law enforcement experiences in interacting with each other. They outline four key aspects of procedural justice that are important in enhancing victims’ experience with law enforcement, voice, dignity and respect, neutrality, and trustworthy motives, along with ideas on how law enforcement may practice these aspects.

Palmer, N. A., & Kutateladze, B. L. (2022). What prosecutors and the police should do about underreporting of anti-LGBTQ hate crime. Sexuality Research and Social Policy, 19(3), 1190–1204.
This article details a study with LGBTQ individuals and law enforcement professionals to determine the challenges in working with these victims. The authors propose a list of recommendations for policy and practice to enhance work with this specific population of victims.

Updegrove, A. H., & Muftic, L. R. (2019). Childhood polyvictimization, adult violent victimization, and trauma symptomatology: An exploratory study of prostitution diversion program participants. Journal of Family Violence, 34(8), 733–743.
Undergrove and Muftic (2019) examine the relationship between childhood victimization and involvement in prostitution. They further explore prostitution diversion programs and the ongoing policy of incarcerating individuals who fail to comply with program requirements. They use evidence to discuss the reasons these individuals may fail to comply and propose policy reform that may better address these root causes.

Winters, G. M., Colombino, N., Schaaf, S., Laake, A. L. W., Jeglic, E. L., & Calkins, C. (2020). Why do child sexual abuse victims not tell anyone about their abuse? An exploration of factors that prevent and promote disclosure. Behavioral Sciences & the Law, 38,(6), 586–611.
Winters et al. (2020) examine the factors that increase or decrease the likelihood that victims of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) will report their victimization. The study findings have implications for a CSA response that may increase reporting.

This highly recommended optional resource provides an in-depth discussion of best practices in responding to child victims of violence. There are multiple areas in which law enforcement practices may be enhanced, and the outline of each of these areas serves as a strong model for generating ideas for the assignments in Module 4.
