For Module 1, you will read:

  • Chapter 2: Charter principal autonomy: A missed connection between data-driven decision-making and instructional leadership
This chapter argues for the importance of data in instructional leadership. However, it also illustrates how a misguided view of data may fail to bring school improvements; for example, if principals lean on data solely for “increasing test scores, rather than on improving the culture, dialogue and capacity around data literacy within the school" (p. 6). This chapter will also introduce you to the textbook's format. Unlike textbooks that offer a broad overview of concepts presented in a linear fashion, this textbook takes a deep dive into data and educational leadership by examining real-world examples. This chapter relays lessons learned by principals at two struggling charter schools in Louisiana.

  • Chapter 8: Principals’ and teachers’ perceptions of teacher evaluation and their implications in Arab schools in Israel
The next chapter takes us to Israel and examines how cultural norms can impact how data is used in an Arab culture. Many of you have worked in culturally-diverse settings in your respective schools, but the cultural challenges discussed in this chapter may provide a new lens for approaching the familiar challenge of promoting equity and excellence in a multicultural setting.
