This article is about the success of Park Ridge’s Police Department crisis intervention team training. As the public has become increasingly aware of the need to help individuals with mental illness, Park Ridge’s Director of Community Oriented Policing Services recognized the need for enlisting the community to help prevent and mitigate problems by creating a unique partnership with the police department. The police department worked with the Center for Public Safety and Justice at the University of Illinois and with the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and developed a collaborative effort that included medical, personnel, faith leaders, and the residents of Park Ridge.
