Leaders today face a growing variety of demands due to fluctuating organizational environments and the varying role expectations of those in leadership throughout the organization. Competent, effective leaders are often lacking in organizations, with disastrous results. Poor leadership has been identified as a primary reason for the failures of organizations large and small, including notables such as Bear Sterns and for example. This article will introduce the essential components that all leadership development programs need to contain.

This article addresses the question, “What makes a great leader? This age-old question has led to many discussions and debates among scholars and, ultimately, the development of many leadership theories. The requirements for leadership have vastly changed in a short amount of time due to globalization and technology. As leadership has evolved, a new set of competencies is now required by leaders who want to influence on a global scale. This article discusses these competencies in a 21st-century organization.
