Video: Creating a Project on NVivo (Windows)
Process Aid: Creating a Project on NVivo
1. ENTERING THE PROJECT TITLE
- Begin by clicking on the + sign to create a new project. A dialog box will open upon clicking the + sign.
- Enter a project title per your preference.
- Click on the Browse button to ensure that you are saving your project in the correct folder. (Do not save the project file in a cloud folder such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, etc. This can lead to the corruption of the project file.)
2. STORING THE PROJECT IN A CHOSEN FOLDER
- Select the folder in which you would like to save the project.
- Click Save to confirm the selection. (This will make it easier to find the project for taking a backup by copying the project file to another location.)
3. SELECTING TO KEEP A LOG OF USER ACTIONS
- Check the box for the option to Keep a Log of User Action and then click the Next button. (This is useful for tracking actions performed on NVivo in case you see unexpected changes in the project.)
4. CHOOSING HOW TO SAVE THE PROJECT
- Select the option for how you want to save your progress on the project as you work on NVivo by selecting Yes next to the chosen option. The first option lets NVivo autosave the project as and when actions are performed on the program. This option does not let the user undo an action, such as retrieving a code that has been accidentally deleted. The second option for manual saving offers a reminder at a set time interval for the user to save the progress. With the option to manually save a project, the user can undo up to 10 actions.
- Do not change any options under Project Recovery.
- Click on the Create Project button.

5. LEARNING THE PROJECT LAYOUT
- This screen will appear once the project has been created. The blue column on the left functions as a navigation panel that can be used to access the different folders on the program. The top white horizontal bar functions as an action panel and can be used to access various actions that can be performed on NVivo.
