Chapter 18 continues a review of verbal operants and their role in language acquisition. Applied Behavior Analysis (Cooper et al., 2020) is considered the “golden standard” for textbooks used in BCBA Programs. It is already aligned to the BACB’s 5th task list; therefore, making it an appropriate textbook for comprehension and application of behavior analytic concepts and exam preparation for the Board-Certified Behavior Analysis exam.

Preschool children were trained to make autoclitic responses evoked by the weakness of the relation controlling a primary tact response. The method “public accompaniment” was used during this study.
Listening is Behaving Verbally

The author questions the use of the term “listener” since the listener engages in a repertoire of behaviors that is itself verbal, which often moves beyond simply mediating consequences for the speaker’s behalf.

This study is a descriptive analysis that sought to determine if there is a general sequence of intraverbal acquisition by typically developing children and for children with autism and if this sequence could be used as a framework for intraverbal assessment and intervention.

This study uses an alternating treatment design to compare the effects of using visual (textual) and echoic prompts on the acquisition of intraverbal responses (answering questions).
