Miller, G. (2010). Learning the language of addiction counseling. John Wiley and Sons. Read Chapters 1, 2, and 5. This book offers a great basis for a beginning look at substance use and addictive disorder with a focus on family system issues. The first and second chapters lay the foundation for discussion of substance use with a brief overview of models of addiction and the role of the treatment professional. Chapter 5 introduces the reader to the core treatment process used in treating addiction. Note the distinctions made in responding to individuals and to families.
Barnard, M. (2006). Drug addiction and families. Kingsley Publishers. This book provides great information about the impact of addiction on families. It is written for therapists, but would also be a great resource for families. This week, you will read Chapter 1, What is the Problem? and Chapter 2, Family Journeys of Discovery, Adaptation, and Expulsion: Cycles of Response to Drugs in the Family.
