This book provides a complete overview of the complex family systems issues that are impacted by addiction. Understanding how family members can be affected is an important part of helping the entire family system. This book is especially valuable because it specifically focuses on emotional, relational, and behavioral consequences for families when there is a family member with a substance use disorder. This week, you will read four chapters from this resource: Chapter 6, Codependence; Chapter 7, Emotional Consequences of Living with a Person with a SUD; Chapter 8, Relational Consequences of Living with a Person with a SUD; and Chapter 9, Behavioral Consequences of Living with a Person with a SUD.

Platt, L. F., & Skowron, E. A. (2013). The family genogram interview: Reliability and validity of a new interview protocol. Family Journal, 21(1), 35–45.
This article describes the use of genograms when working with families. Genograms are widely used in family therapy, and are a valuable tool with working with addicted families. This article is a great resource for conducting genogram interviews.

LeCroy, C. (1992). A family systems approach to the treatment of codependency. In Case Studies in Social Work Practice (pp. 92-95). Brooks Cole Publishing.
This book has many case studies that demonstrate intervention with a variety of issues. This chapter focuses on a case study of a family dealing with substance abuse and provides an illustration of how family systems are impacted by it.
