Read Chapter 11 for information on how sampling decisions are made based on paradigms and specific populations of interest. Excellent information about sample size considerations and strategies for selecting samples (probability, theoretical and convenience) is provided, which you will find useful in completing your Lesson 8 Assignment.

Read sections on: Sampling (including external validity, sampling technology, statistical terms in sampling, probability sampling, and nonprobability sampling). These webpages include information similar to the Mertens (2019) reading from Chapter 11 but uses different terms and examples. If you were confused by the Mertens (2019) reading or didn’t understand some of the concepts, the way they are presented in this resource can be helpful.

This article provides an illustration of the ongoing debate in qualitative research regarding “How many participants are enough?” and includes some helpful guidelines to discuss. Use information from this resource to support your decisions about sampling for qualitative research in Lesson 8 and subsequent assignments (including Lesson 12 Signature Assignment).
Sample Size in Quantitative Research
Fowler, S. B., & Lapp, V. (2019). Sample size in quantitative research: Sample size will affect the significance of your research. American Nurse Today, 14(5), 61–62.
This article provides information about why sample size is important in quantitative research and provides guidance about the “typical” number of participants that may be needed for different kinds of quantitative studies. This information is really helpful when reviewing published research and trying to determine if the reported sample is reasonable. This is a great source to cite when justifying your own proposed sample size for assignments throughout this course.
