Proposing to “kill the Indian and save the man,” U.S. Army Captain Richard H. Pratt envisioned an educational system that would erase the Native American culture and “civilize” the continent’s Indigenous people. His chosen method? The Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Pratt in 1879, was a cruel model for other institutions in the U.S. and Canada, subjecting children to abuse and alienation from their families, languages, and religions. This film combines archival materials with interviews.
