Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder resulting from the intersection of nature and nurture, or gene and environment. It requires both a biological (genetic) predisposition and a heritable (genetic) component. Epigenetics, the study of gene expression modifications, plays a role in modifying the genome due to gene and environment interactions. Current understanding includes DNA methylation, histone regulation, and noncoding RNA regulation.
