Month 1 Required Resources

Textbooks

The following copy of the DSM-5-TR is available through the university library using the link provided.

  • The DSM is the primary text for diagnosing mental health disorders in the United States. It provides descriptions of and assessment criteria for all mental disorders currently recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, and thus it is vital for mental health practitioners to be familiar with its contents and utilization. While the purchase of a physical copy of this text is not required, it is strongly recommended since  the DSM is utilized as a core reference source for clinical work.

The following resource is available through DART
Zuckerman, E. (2019). Clinician’s thesaurus: The guide to conducting interviews and writing psychological reports (8th ed.) . The Guilford Press.

  • The Clinician’s Thesaurus is an excellent resource to help students develop the tools necessary to write professional, clinical assessment reports. It will help you to improve interview, diagnostic, mental status exam, and clinical vocabulary skills.

Month 1 Optional Resources

Textbooks

The following two optional resources are available through the university library using the links provided.

  • This is a ‘time-honored’ book that has helped generations of new psychotherapists learn about the ‘real world’ of clinical work in the mental health field, beyond the theories and specific technical skills. It helps therapists become more effective in their clinical practice, discussing what works and what doesn’t in clinical practice, and providing practice resources, including practice forms that you can utilize. While this is not available through the library, it is a really good resource and it is recommended for your reading.
  • This book provides a historical and conceptual overview of how societies and professionals have understood mental illness through the ages. This review includes a discussion of the ‘current status’ of the field of mental health treatment, including a critique of the categorical medical model embodied in the DSM. It then proposes a new, more dynamic, and integrated model of mental health/illness to provide the field a foundation for moving forward based on the newest findings regarding human behavior and psychological functioning.
