This guide provides information for using NVivo.

Process Aid: Editing Codes

Editing Code Names
  • To edit the name of a code, navigate to the code list in the system folder for Codes in the navigation panel. 
  • Lightly left-click on the name of the code you wish to edit. This will open up a text bar where you can make the necessary edits. 

  • Type in the new code name.

  • Click anywhere outside the text bar in NVivo to save the change. 


Editing Code Names or Any Other Code Properties
  • Highlight the code you wish to edit. 
  • Click on Item under the Home tab in the action panel at the top. 
  • Select Code Properties from the menu. 

OR

  • Right-click on the code you wish to edit (change the name and/or description). 
  • Select Code Properties from the right-click menu.


This will open the same dialog box used for creating a code.

  • Make the necessary modifications. 
  • Click OK to save the changes. 

Process Aid: Uncoding References from Codes

Uncoding a Data Excerpt from a File
  • Highlight the data excerpt you wish to uncode. 
  • Click on Uncode under the Document tab in the action panel at the top. 
  • Select Uncode again from the menu.


OR

  • Highlight the data excerpt you wish to uncode.
  • Right-click on the highlighted excerpt. 
  • Select Uncode from the right-click menu. 


This will open a new dialog box with a list of all codes. Only the codes(s) applicable to the highlighted excerpt will be open for selection. 

  • Check the box for the code(s) you wish to remove from the data excerpt. 
  • Click OK to confirm the selection. 

This will complete the uncoding of the selected excerpt.


Uncoding References from a Code
  • Open the code from which you wish to uncode references in the list of codes within the system folder for Codes. This will open the list of references assigned to the chosen code. 
  • Highlight the reference(s) you wish to remove from the code. 
  • Click on Uncode from this Code under the Code tab in the action panel at the top. 

 


OR

  • Highlight the reference(s) you wish to remove from the code. 
  • Click on Uncode from this Code under the Code tab in the action panel at the top. This will complete the process of uncoding the reference(s) from the code. 

Process Aid: Merging Codes

  • Right-click on the code you wish to merge in the list of codes in the system folder for Codes. 
  • Select Cut in the right-click menu. 


  • Right-click on the code you wish to merge the first code into. 
  • Select Merge into Selected Code in the right-click menu. 


  • Click OK in the new dialog box that appears on the screen.


  • This will update the number of files and references of the second code to reflect the merging of the two codes. Please note that only file was coded for this example. Hence, the number of files in this image remains unchanged.

Process Aid: Making an Existing Independent Code a Subcode/Child Code

  • Right-click on the chosen independent code in the list of codes in the system folder for Codes. 
  • Select Cut from the right-click menu. 


  • Right-click on the chosen parent code you wish to add the subcode/child code.
  • Select Paste from the right-click menu.


  • Click on the + sign that appears to the left of the parent code. This will display the new child code nestled under it.
