This session is an overview of how to write in an academic tone. Writing in an academic tone requires every sentence to have a purpose with paragraphs that are organized in a manner, so the reader becomes engaged in your topic. Writing is a skill, and like any other skill we develop in life, we must practice, practice, practice. During this session we will discuss writing paragraphs, specifically using a technique, IDEA, that will help you remember to cover the essentials when writing. We will cover examples of paragraphs written in an academic tone and also identify areas of improvement for others. A template will be provided that can help you with this concept, and with time, you will find that it will become second nature.

This source explains when and how to refer to yourself as the writer in “I” and when you should use “we.” At National University, the use of “I” is acceptable and even encouraged in the dissertation, particularly when describing the researcher's role, decisions, or reflexivity. However, academic traditions vary, and some well-meaning faculty members may prefer a more traditional, impersonal style that avoids first-person usage. In such cases, it is appropriate to respectfully share this guidance to support your scholarly integrity and APA correct practice while engaging in a constructive conversation about evolving academic conventions.
