Chapter 4: Quality and Performance

This chapter reviews the basic principles of total quality management (TQM) and Six Sigma. The four major costs of quality and their relationship to ethics and overall costs of production, services, and delivery. Learning how to construct process control charts and determine if a process is out of statistical control. Lastly, understanding how to review a process.

Chapter 5: Lean Systems

This is an interesting chapter that covers continuous improvement using lean systems. Understanding the characteristics of a lean system, designing lean system layouts, using the Kanban System, and value stream mapping. Finally, the benefits and how to implement them to resolve obstacles.

Chapter 6: Capacity Planning

This chapter is an introduction to capacity planning. Capacity long-term planning, timing, and sizing strategies are reviewed. Plus, a systemic approach to decision-making and tools for capacity planning. Examples will be provided and demonstrated.

Supplement B: Waiting Lines (pages 253 – 271)

This is an important component of the module. Waiting lines will be reviewed and analyzed to understand how to approach finding solutions. Modules will be reviewed with simulations. Finally, covering decision-making areas for management.

Chapter 7: Constraint Management

This is an interesting chapter to review. It covers the theories of constraints and bottlenecks in service processes. Theories will be applied to product-mix decisions. Additionally, there is information on how to manage constraints in line processing.

Chapter 4: Quality and Performance
This is a great PowerPoint presentation to see the graphs and charts used for improvements. Many scenarios are included in both manufacturing and service companies. Process control charts are included for managing the new process for success.
Chapter 5: Lean Systems
The presentation for this chapter is interesting to view. Topics are in a bullet format with definitions and examples. The figures are very helpful to understand how systems are structured and implemented. Visuals and tables show the details to understand and apply the systems; for example, The Eight Types of Waste or Muda.
Chapter 6: Capacity Planning
This presentation is helpful to review and study the visuals provided. Capacity planning is a serious part of efficiency and cost planning. This is especially important in manufacturing companies.
Chapter 7: Constraint Management
This presentation is helpful to review calculations and examples for managing constraints in processes. Bottlenecks in manufacturing processes are covered with associated costs. An interesting example is Keith’s Car Wash.
Chapter 8: Project Management
This presentation is helpful when reviewing the major activities associated with developing a project plan. Understanding how to define the scope and objectives of a project is important for success. A work breakdown structure is reviewed for developing all the work that has to be completed in the project.
