In the contemporary business landscape, the imperative for innovative approaches to business model innovation (BMI) is more pronounced than ever, especially given the pressing grand challenges, technological disruptions, digital transformation, and pressing environmental and social concerns of our era. The prevailing discourse in business model and BMI scholarship predominantly revolves around established frameworks and methodologies, thereby not fully capturing the burgeoning opportunities and transformative forces redefining BMI's future trajectory. Customers expect corporate social responsibility, and if an organization is insensitive to these issues, it runs the risk of losing its key customers. The interaction and integration of corporate social responsibility and supply chain management have led to the emergence of sustainable supply chain management. Industrial Clusters in International Value Chains by
Clusters are considered crucial nodes in the ongoing transformation of international value chains (IVCs). Due to technological advancements and external shocks, such as pandemic and political conflicts, value chains (VCs) have been spatially and functionally shortening, and clusters are well suited to address the resulting demand for more diversified and higher value-adding activities in geographical proximity, such as European economic area. However, clusters differ in their positions and capability to advance in IVCs, which induces the research problem of the conditions for cluster upgrading (CU). This monograph aims to develop a theoretical framework for regional CU and empirically verify this framework based on ICT clusters in Europe. It advances the theory of upgrading by linking the VC governance and capability approaches, broadening the empirical evidence on the conditions of CU, and providing policy recommendations. The unique value of the findings from research and practice results in the identification of the determinants for CU and conceptualizes them into new theoretical constructs of the sufficient Framework Conditions and the necessary and sufficient Public-Private Knowledge Governance. Our empirical basis is European clusters in ICT, an industry being one of the Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) for innovation and VC transformation. Industry 4. 0 to Industry 5. 0 by
This is an Open Access book. In 2015, Industry 4.0 was announced with the rise of industrialization by the European Parliament, supporting policy, research, and infrastructure funding. In 2020, Industry 5.0 was launched as an evolution of Industry 4.0, towards societal and ecological values in a sustainable, human-centric, and resilient transition. In 2023, the IN4ACT research project team completed 4 years of research on the impact on these initiatives. Presentations reviewing the progress of management practices and economics led to conversations about what's next. The unanticipated rise in late 2022 of Generative AI technologies (e.g. ChatGPT, DALL-E) sparked dialogues with an extended circle of researchers on impacts not considered in 2015 or in 2020. This collection of chapters reflects multiple perspectives on research findings to 2023, prospects for 2024, and considerations on ways the techno-economic industrial revolutions may be reshaped into desirable futures respecting social and ecological concerns.
