Florida State University’s work within the community provides key insights on how nonprofit organizations can approach partnerships through a diverse, equitable lens. Highlighting several challenges encountered by previous researchers in the field, as well as through direct experience in a tactical urbanism program, this research highlights how critical inclusion, partnership, communication, and bottom-up tactics are essential for long-term success.

By interviewing representatives from several non-profit organizations, the researchers were able to identify key opportunities and barriers to success when attempting to organize partnerships between local K-12 schools and aligned non-profits. This article describes several of the requirements for developing an inclusive partnership built on a foundation of trust and active engagement; barriers to success are noted as well.

Academic service-learning partnerships are another common method of creating mutually beneficial opportunities for learning and growth. This qualitative research provides key insights on methods to effectively measure community impact of these partnerships and the outcomes of this work to a broader external audience.
