In this 17-minute video, Linda Cliatt-Wayman describes how her philosophy of teaching and learning assisted her as a principal at a failing high school in Philadelphia. She initially thought she would “lay down the law” but came to see that she had to look within herself, channel her beliefs, and then lead and love students no matter what. This approach resulted in her turning around three consistently low-performing schools. Her personal experience is not only interesting because of what she has achieved, but also because of the growth she experienced as an educator.

In this article, Faryadi describes how he approaches the writing of his philosophy of teaching statement from a constructivist point of view. He approaches the development of his statement by explaining his objectives, mission, and vision. He also provides advice for others in developing their own teaching philosophy statements. His example may provide guidance for you as you develop your philosophy of teaching statement in this week’s assignment.

In Chapter 2 (pp. 9-36): What is a Teaching Philosophy and Why do I Need One? The authors discuss what a teaching philosophy is and why it is important to have one. They characterize a teaching philosophy of being dynamic and changing as you gain more experience and grow in your practice.
Then, in Chapter 3, How Do I Articulate My Philosophy, the authors assist you in developing the components of what will become your teaching philosophy by identifying your core values and beliefs and reflecting on your past education experiences to craft a philosophy of teaching statement. They also provide some teaching philosophy examples for you as a guide.
