The authors reviewed 71 studies in which environmental enrichment was used as a treatment for problem behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement. They then reviewed the treatment of environment enrichment in conjunction with prompting, reinforcement, blocking and restraint.

This study evaluated the use of stereotypy as a reinforcement for alternative behavior. The authors used a component analysis to determine the effective intervention.

The authors evaluated the effects of using matched stimuli to three unrelated forms of behavior (dangerous climbing and jumping, saliva manipulation and hand mouthing). Each of these behaviors were automatically reinforced.
A comparison of noncontingent reinforcement and sensory extinction as treatment for self-injurious behavior
Roscoe, E. M., Iwata, B. A., & Goh, H. (1998). A comparison of noncontingent reinforcement and sensory extinction as treatment for self-injurious behavior. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 31, 635-646.
This study compared the effects of noncontingent reinforcement and sensory extinction on self-injurious behavior of 3 individuals with developmental disabilities. Results indicated that both treatments were effective in reducing SIB, although noncontingent reinforcement produced a more rapid or greater response than sensory extinction.
