Primary Sources for Legal Research

Nexis Uni and Westlaw both provide access to primary and secondary legal sources including:

  • Case law
  • Legislation
  • Regulations
  • Constitutions
  • Treaties

You can browse by topic or practice area to find cases, statues, regulations, secondary sources are more consolidated into one area. These databases let you search by specific terms or use prefilled keywords.

You can also view a lot of legal information for free online.  Visit this guide for helpful links and resources.

Secondary sources can also be used to get to primary law.  Footnotes, annotations, as well as headnotes (Nexis Uni) and key numbers (Westlaw) which link sources by topic can help you with your research.
