Though relational databases come in many flavors, SQL is often the standard language to interact with them. In this chapter, we will define what a relational database is, and describe different commercial and open-source platforms.

Structured Query Language is the common link between all relational database platforms. Learning it on one platform will enable you to quickly adapt it to other databases. SQL is probably one of the most stable and transferable skills you can have in any information technology field.

Tables are made up of columns (or fields) and each column stores a single piece of data. However, different platforms will have different data type styles. For this module the CHAR, INT, and DATE data types in this video will be sufficient. For a complete list of data types, consult your platform documentation.
