Lesson 7

Merrell K.W., Ervin, R.A., Peacock, G. G., & Renshaw, T.L. (2022). School psychology for the 21st century: Foundations and practices (3rd ed.). The Guilford Press.

  • Chapter Four, Becoming Culturally Responsive: Diversity and Multicultural Issues in School Psychology (Merrell, et al., 2022) is a chapter that includes relevant information regarding multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills.  School psychologists are change agents who work in an extremely diverse setting.  In doing so, it is critical to have an awareness of the role that ethnicity, language, gender identity, sexual orientation, and family dynamics have in the field.  Being self-aware and understanding your culture and biases are an important first step in being able to support individuals who have cultures/traditions experiences that are different from yours (pages 68-83). This chapter is an introduction to the diverse changes in the K-12 settings. It is noted that the student population is over 50% comprised of students considered Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and students whose primary language is not English with over 80% of the school personnel (teachers and school psychologists). Due to the racial and cultural gap between public school staff and students, it is important that the staff engage in self-reflection regarding their knowledge and understanding of cultures and races that are different than theirs. This chapter introduces the concepts of cultural responsiveness noting that no one knows everything about every culture and race, but one’s willingness to increase their knowledge about those they are not familiar with is important for the school psychologist to be able to advocate for the student. The chapter also notes the biases that everyone has and asserts that we as ethical and multicultural school psychologists engage in behaviors that result in deeper knowledge regarding the various cultures and races that we serve. This chapter introduces several topics such as White privilege, microaggressions, discrimination, and social justice
