In the Sattler text read chapters:
1 Challenges in Assessing Children: The Process (pp. 1-23)
2 Challenges in Assessing Children: The Context (pp. 25-58)
3 Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues (pp. 59-89)
4 A Primer on Statistics and Psychometrics (pp. 91-135)
5 Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Children (pp. 137-182)
Chapter One includes information related to the foundational aspects of assessing children. This chapter includes information about the four pillars of assessment, guidelines around the assessment process, and the processes of multimethod assessment.
Chapter Two includes strategies and considerations related to “labeling” children, variables one should consider when assessing children, the theories of multimethod assessment, and scoring and interpretation of computer-based administer assessments. This chapter also includes strategies to assist in becoming an effective assessor. This chapter can assist the reader in developing a more comprehensive understanding of the assessment process.
Chapter Three’s content includes information related to the ethical, legal, and professional issues related to assessing children. Ethical aspects of school psychology were introduced to you in the second course of the program (PED 608). The content in this chapter includes the APA’s ethical principles, guidelines, and code of conduct. Included in this chapter is information related to the ethical aspects of working with ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse populations. Concepts you will read about include confidentiality, record keeping protocols, informed consent, and aspects of working with girls/women, people with disabilities, transgender and nonconforming people.
Chapter Four includes descriptions of the statistics and scores associated with assessment data. You will read about reliability, validity, regression, norm-references tests, and a variety of scores and correlations. This information is important to understand as the assessment data derived through assessments will be used as one consideration in the determination process used to identify children for Special Education. As a school psychologist, you are expected to understand how the scores relate to norm groups and be able to explain the scores (interpret them) to parents and school staff in a way that is easily understood.
Chapter Five includes a variety of aspects to consider when assessing culturally, linguistically, and diverse children. The process of assessing children who are bilingual includes considerations to ensure the data obtained measure cognitive skills and not English language acquisition. These considerations along with culturally-related aspects are explored in this chapter.
