Technology-Infused Math Instruction: Teaching Outside the Box

Dickenson, P., & Coddington, L. (2021). Technology-infused math instruction: Teaching outside the box (2nd ed.). Kendall Hunt Publishing.

  • Read Chapters 3 and 4

Chapter 3 focuses on how educators can effectively design mathematics instruction for K–12 students by planning with a deep understanding of how students learn, where they may struggle, and how to support them in moving toward mastery. A central theme is the importance of working within each student’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), using scaffolding, formative assessment, and differentiated strategies to build prior knowledge and address misconceptions. The chapter highlights how teachers can plan instruction that is both rigorous and accessible by incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL), culturally and linguistically responsive practices, and the Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) framework. Teachers are encouraged to select tasks and technology tools intentionally to promote conceptual understanding, support independent learning, and guide students through increasingly complex levels of thinking. By thoughtfully designing lessons that adapt to individual needs, teachers can ensure all students are engaged, supported, and progressing toward deep mathematical understanding.

Chapter 4 emphasizes the power of open-ended tasks and daily math routines in creating inclusive, language-rich classrooms where all K–12 students can engage meaningfully in mathematics. It highlights how open-ended tasks promote multiple ways of thinking, allow for varied entry points, and respectfully challenge learners at different levels. The chapter also underscores the importance of developing students’ mathematical academic language (especially for English language learners) through structured discussions and routines like Number Talks. Teachers should read this chapter to better understand how to design accessible, engaging tasks that foster deep thinking, support language development, and create a classroom culture where every student’s voice and reasoning matter.
