National University Institutional Repository

Who can add items to the IR?

Currently, the IR is accepting submissions from faculty and staff of National University for all scholarly work. National University students and alumni may submit master's theses & doctoral dissertations completed at National University, Northcentral University, and John F. Kennedy School of Law.

Can I deposit my publications in the NU Institutional Repository myself?

We need to review all publications to make sure they meet our guidelines for inclusion in the repository.

Will my publisher allow me to submit my manuscript to the Repository?

Yes. Publications must be designated as either

  • open access (freely available to view worldwide) or
  • restricted (unavailable for full text view).

If you are unsure whether your publisher will allow you to submit to the Open Collection, here is how you can check:

  1. Find your license

    1. Check your email for the original copyright agreement for your manuscript.

      1. Review it to see whether there is language that specifies that you may make your work available via an institutional repository or a personal website.
    2. Use the Open Policy Finder list of publisher copyright policies and self-archiving.
      1. This allows you to search for the journal title or publisher if you do not have access to the copyright transfer agreement.
    3. Check the publisher's website
  2. Confirm what version you are allowed to deposit: final published manuscript, accepted manuscript, or preprint.

    • Published manuscript= the published version (i.e. with the publisher's formatting and page numbers).

    • Accepted manuscript = includes revisions made through the peer/editorial review process, but it should not include publisher branding or final editing.
    • Pre-print/submitted =  the article draft as you first submitted it for publication. It does not include revisions made through the peer/editorial review process, nor include publisher branding or final editing.
  3. Confirm if there is an embargo on your manuscript

  • This is a period of time post-publication that you must wait before the publisher allows it to be publicly shared in our repository.
  • An embargo does NOT prevent you from submitting to our open collection - we will simply hold your manuscript until the embargo period has passed

Please read the license carefully. If you have any questions, please contact us or schedule 1-1 copyright consultation.

What about accepted manuscripts?

Yes. You may submit the accepted manuscript for deposit in the repository if the publisher allows it.

Send us a PDF copy of your final manuscript version as you submitted it- you should include revisions made through the peer/editorial review process (if applicable) but should not include publisher branding or final editing.

What about pre-prints?

Yes. You may submit a pre-print (submited) version of a publication for deposit in the repository if the publisher allows it.

Send us a PDF copy of your submitted draft - you should NOT include revisions made through the peer & editorial review process, nor include publisher branding or final editing.

What about embargoed content?

Yes. You may submit your manuscript for deposit in the repository, even if it's under an embargo (a period of time post-publication that you must wait before the publisher allows it to be publicly shared in our repository).

You must note the embargo when you submit your manuscript.

What about posters or presentations from conferences?

The NU Institutional Repository includes content from a growing number of faculty and student research conferences and symposia. If you would like to include your poster or presentation, please use this form.

What about student dissertations & theses?

Yes. We welcome current students and alumni to submit their thesis or dissertation to our NU Masters and Dissertations (Open Access).  Please use the Thesis & Dissertation Deposit Form.  Note that we cannot accept theses or dissertations completed at another institution.

What formats can you accept in the NU Institutional Repository?

The IR can accept multiple formats for all digital works. We prefer to accept PDFs for written works. Please contact us if you have a question about the format of your work.

What's the deal with the "NU Scholarly Work (Restricted)" collection?

The full text/file of items in our restricted collections will NOT  be available to the public, only the description. Readers will be directed to contact you for permission to read the full text.

You should only submit to our restricted collection if you are unable to submit either:

  1. any version of your manuscript to our open collection, or
  2. any version that you are comfortable with to our open collection. For example, you may be allowed to submit your pre-print, but you may not be comfortable with that version being public.

In those cases, please instead submit your most complete (published or accepted) version of your manuscript to our restricted repository.

Why submit to our restricted collection at all, then? You may wish to do so if you want a record of your publication available in the same location (i.e. the NU Institutional Repository) as your other scholarly work (in our open collection).
