The Commons

Welcome to the NU Commons Learning Resources

At NU, you are a valued part of the Navigator community – a connected, engaged, and inspired community of learners from across the country and around the globe. The NU Commons gives you access to this wider community for connection and support across courses and programs. In addition to gaining access to each other, students gain access to support services and resources in our communities.

Upon entering NU all students, faculty and academic staff gain access to the NU Commons (Commons), a community-based virtual environment that provides opportunities to collaborate and engage with other students, faculty, staff, and alumni across the university. We encourage you to visit and get involved in your school Commons communities.

Currently the NU Commons is only available to students taking courses through NCUOne.

What do Students Say About the Commons?

Entering the Commons

The Commons hosts specific communities organized around schools, departments, degree programs, specializations, and other areas of connection. You enter our community space through the learning management system , directly or from any Commons notification email.

From the learning management system click on the Commons link on the main top navigation or scroll down to the Commons widget to visit your communities.  From the NU Commons widget, you will be able to view how many new posts have been made overall and to your school community since you last visited.  You can also see a summary of a few of the most recent posts.  Any of the links within the widget will take you directly into the Commons.

To directly visit the Commons  you can bookmark and open the Commons in any browser with this url: https://Commons.ncu.edu  You can also install the Commons on your mobile device for quick access directly into the Commons.

Any link within your daily summary will also take you into a conversation or a community in the Commons.

For a general tour of how to navigate the Commons pages, click on the Tours link in the Help dropdown at the top of any page within The Commons.

Creating a Community of Support

Having a supportive community by your side during your unique journey towards your dreams and goals supports the whole you. Most of our communities are hosted by a community steward, or by a faculty or staff member with an interest and passion for the community and its focus.  We also have some students who serve as community co-stewards. Stewards post regularly, check-in with the community, share resources and engage in conversations.

We encourage all community members to share resources and experiences, to respond to inquiries, to inspire each other, to encourage and advocate for each other during challenges and most importantly to celebrate their successes. Engagement and participation are personal and voluntary.

To promote quality experiences and a supportive academic culture that supports us to fulfill our community promise to each other and benefits all members we established our Commons engagement guidelines. Here you will find a description of each of our guidelines  every member of our community has agreed to practice as we engage together.  Our engagement guidelines are:

  • Share your Experiences and Seek Support
  • Express Respect
  • Commit to Curiosity
  • Invite Engagement
  • Appreciate Diversity
  • Assume Positive Intent and Acknowledge Unintended Impacts
  • Refrain from Soliciting

If you ever have a concern about a post or an exchange in the Commons let us know at Commons@nu.edu
