This resource provides an overview of Chapter 1 of the five-chapter dissertation (PhD). Some of this information also applies to Section 1 of the dissertation-in-practice (EdD). Pay particular attention to the discussion of alignment of the problem, purpose, and research questions. Although written from primarily a qualitative research perspective, the section on problem statement applies universally to educational research, including the capstone project of the EdS degree. This reading also provides a primer for the role of the theoretical or conceptual framework in research.

This resource also discusses problem statements but from a quantitative perspective. Conceptual frameworks are discussed, along with the development of research questions and hypotheses. This resource also describes the alignment of the problem statement and purpose statements. Pay particular attention to the alignment of inductive and deductive reasoning with qualitative and quantitative research as well as the examples on researchable v. non-researchable questions in Table 4.1. The “Critical Thinker Alert” sections are particularly helpful in understanding the material.

This resource is an exemplar dissertation that can help you visualize the various aspects of a research study, specifically the sections of a dissertation, as they are aligned with each other. This dissertation was used as the example problem and purpose in the week’s lesson. Templates sometimes change slightly, so be sure that you are following the latest template available in the Dissertation Center (PhD) or Doctoral Center (EdD and EdS, to some extent).
