Internet browsers maintain a local copy of websites and other related items on your disk or in memory to speed up reloading of previously visited sites. However, allowing your cache to become too large may slow your computer down, or prevent a website from loading in the most up-to-date information.
If you are experiencing issues accessing a library database, we recommend clearing your web browser's cache and cookies and restarting it. Simply hold down the ctrl+shift+delete keys and release. Select cookies, cache, and temporary internet files, if available, to clear. Note that to retain saved passwords, you may need to uncheck that option prior to clearing your files.
Please see the document below for instructions on how to clear your cookies and cache.
University courses may include library resources as required or supplemental course readings. Students, as well as faculty, access library resources in the course room via a persistent URL or permalink. Permalinks are exactly what they sound like—durable links that connect directly to a full-text resource without prompting for login or breakage in the link. This page provides an overview of permalinks, in addition to instructions on capturing permalinks depending on which library database you are utilizing.
As a faculty member, you can capture permalinks to share with your students. You can share permalinks to specific resources and, in some instances, you can share permalinks to sets of search results. There is a corresponding page on Persistent URLs that you can share with your students.
Finally, if you or your students encounter broken permalinks in the course room, please report the broken link to the Library at library@ncu.edu.
A persistent URL (PURL) is a durable link that connects users directly to an article, eBook, or other item in our Library.
PURLs can be useful when creating syllabi, bibliographies, and other research tools. PURLs also help us remain in compliance with copyright rules when linking to Library resources.
Each Library database has a different process for capturing PURLs. This guide addresses the unique process for each database.
Links are usually persistent but NOT necessarily permanent. PURLs may become obsolete over time, especially as our Library database subscriptions change year to year. Make sure to test links on a routine basis.
Copyright rules are no exception for PURLs. Make sure to cite the source when linking or downloading Library resources.
Not all database vendors offer PURLs. This guide covers all databases which do offer PURLs.
Unfortunately, not every Library database supports persistent linking. The following databases currently do not support persistent linking: ETS Test Link, ReferenceUSA, Ulrichsweb, Web of Knowledge, Westlaw Campus Research. Please contact the Instructional Design Librarian (tduncan@ncu.edu) directly for alternative solutions for course integration.
If a PURL is producing an error or you are unsure how to capture it, please contact the Library at library@ncu.edu or 888-628-1569.
