This article reviews the changes in the use of the terms “sex” and “gender” in the primary literature of psychology. They point to several breakthroughs in the 1970s that reframed the conversation and how psychologists have analyzed the relationship of sex and gender to biology, to the justification of social-context norms in different eras, and the consensual understanding of sex and gender as it stood in at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century.
