Dalamas and Azzopardi (2019) conducted a qualitative study describing contributors and barriers to organizational change within a national healthcare system. They identify key factors, such as the workforce's high potential and capabilities, as a major driver that can promote organizational change. However, they highlight issues such as “territorial” thoughts and activities and “lack of ownership” of the organizational vision and can create barriers to organizational change. They conclude by providing a useful theoretical framework that can aid managers looking to make major organizational change.

Iachini, A., Seay, K., DeHart, D., Petiwala, A., & Browne, T. (2019). Process and product innovations from a statewide capacity-building initiative for substance use treatment and recovery. Health & Social Work, 44(3), 167–175.
Iachini and colleagues investigated implementing a state-wide initiative to improve substance use treatment and the implementation of evidence-supported practices. Their results and discussions highlight that when considering and implementing organizational change, factors such as buy-in and collaboration can either serve as facilitators or barriers to implementation. The identification of these “key” variables is important to consider when implementing organizational change.

Bonin, L. (2018). Quality improvement in health care: The role of psychologists and psychology. Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings, 25(3), 278–294.
Bonin (2018) discusses the role of psychologists implementing quality improvement systems within healthcare settings. Given the strong research background that psychologists possess, they have a unique role in developing and creating effective and meaningful quality improvement systems within their setting. These quality improvement systems have the potential to vastly improve various important outcomes like clinical outcomes, costs, and access to care.
