This brief examines the costs of prescription drugs among the United States and nine foreign countries which have similar income standards as the United States to determine why drug costs are higher in the United States and whether there are ways the United States can reduce the burden to the large population of uninsured individuals.

Healthcare facilities rely on Medicare reimbursements and payments from other health insurance companies to maintain financial stability to provide healthcare services. Medicare must have submission of the proper International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes to make proper reimbursement payments. These codes, in their 10th version, vary between delivery sites—including in-patient hospitals, out-patient hospitals, and physician practices. In this article, Butler offers how changes to the ICD effects reimbursements.
