This study compared 2 approaches to the assessment of Adult Protective Services (APS) cases. Using administrative data from 869 cases in 2 counties in Maryland, the differences between a nurse/social worker team and a lone social worker in case disposition, risk reduction, recidivism, and cost effectiveness were examined.

This article examines the elements of a new model (ALOHA) that have been trialed on professionals as well as students on qualifying social work training. Such robust assessment models synthesized from theory, research, and best practice are essential to meet contemporary practice challenges, maintain public credibility, and sustain social work internationally.

The authors argue that assessment is the hidden foundation on which EBP efforts are based, and that assessment in social work practice includes many important decisions that shape and orient it. Pivotal issues in assessment and in social work assessment practices are explored, addressing variation across agencies, clients, and practitioners. Without a thorough and wide-ranging assessment, including the active participation of the client(s), EBP efforts may be misdirected or less than optimally effective. Assessment is the actual foundation of EBP and warrants much greater attention in scholarship, education, and professional advocacy.

This case study employs the practitioner-researcher approach to study the social work assessment process through the most prominent diagnostic and assessment systems. The author employs the Person-in-Environment system to assess an elderly woman and compares the assessment results with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual, and the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health. The strengths and limits of each classification system are delineated according to the case parameters.
