North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA for short, entered into force on January 1, 1994. Tariffs were progressively eliminated between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. According to the NAFTA agreement, all duties and quantitative restrictions, except those on a limited number of agricultural products traded with Canada, were eliminated by 2008. On May 18, 2017, President Trump re-negotiated with Canada and Mexico concerning NAFTA. Through these negotiations, the United States supported higher-paying jobs in the United States and grew the U.S. economy by improving U.S. opportunities to trade with Canada and Mexico.
