For Module 4, you will read:

Chapter 11: Data-driven leadership for learning in the age of accountability
This chapter brings the discussion around data to a close by reflecting on the history of data-driven accountability in schools, and pointing to future directions for research. As you read this history, particularly the recounting of the 2000s, consider where you agree with the consequences of a focus on accountability and how you might describe its impact differently. How does your understanding of the recent historical backdrop of data, especially testing, influence your approach to data as an aspiring principal?

This 10-page journal article addresses two questions based on a study conducted in seven Arkansas school districts: (1) How does the manner in which schools use data influence deficit thinking? (2) What school data practices prompt teachers to engage in deficit thinking? As you read the article, actively grapple with the ideas it contains. According to the researchers, when do schools use data in a way that encourages deficit thinking? Have you ever been part of a school that made any of the three mistakes identified by the study? If so, how would you have addressed these issues as a new principal?
