Sanaghan provides an overview of a five-step Collaborative Strategic Planning Process. He has also written a book of the same title that includes a more detailed description of how to conduct a strategic plan.

Sanaghan, P., & Goldstein, L. (n.d.). What a president needs to know: 10 keys to effective strategic planning in higher education. The Sanaghan Group.
Sanaghan and Goldstein have facilitated over 50 strategic planning processes for colleges and universities. In this article, they have identified what might be called “the 10 best practices” to ensure a successful planning process

The authors present further rationale for creating a collaborative strategic planning process. They offer numerous ideas about how institutions involve stakeholders in planning processes to ensure all points of few are heard. This is critical for the success of the strategic plan.
