Open Educational Resources (OER)

A guide for using Open Educational Resources (OER).

Discovering OER

There are many different types of repositories that house Open Educational Resources, and this page is designed as a guide to these different collections. This is by no means a definitive list, but is a good sampling of the types of resources and collections of OER that exist.  Many of the major collections are discussed here, and new resources will be added frequently.

What you can find here:

  • Open Textbooks: Collections of textbooks designed to be open for faculty to reuse - remix - redistribute in courses for free.
  • The major OER Collections:  These are collections of open materials covering all of the educational spectrum. There are materials covering all educational disciplines.
  • OpenCourseWare and Lectures: These are collections of materials submitted by faculty members at universities that are part of the OCW movement.

A hand-drawn digital illustration explaining Open Educational Resources (OER). The title "Open Educational Resources" is illustrated in large blue letters, surrounded by illustrations of textbooks, videos, courses, modules, software, tests, which are all considered techniques, materials, and tools. Text describes OER as materials used for teaching, learning, and research, shared under a public domain or open license for reuse, with a "Creative Commons" logo at the bottom. The right side highlights "Education is Sharing" with a hand signifying that. It illustrates the five R’s of OER: Retain, Reuse, Revise, Remix, and Redistribute, depicted with arrows and stick figures to connect them. In an illustrated graph, it suggests that OER improves access and affordability, and transforms learning for students to perform the same or better. The figure is accompanied by a figure holding a heart in their arms, smiling
