The first week of the course focuses on the foundations of diversity. Review the resources listed below to prepare for this week’s assignment. Before reviewing these resources, read through the assignment instructions so you know what you will be expected to do with this material.

Diversity Terminology
This listing of diversity terminology should be used for reference as you continue in this course. This listing of terminology is not meant to be an exhaustive list; however, these concepts will continue to show up in the units and readings throughout the course. The selected terms are commonly used by diversity and inclusion practitioners but, please note, many of these terms are continually evolving.

Romainville attempts to consolidate the different notions of cultural diversity into a legal concept.

- The word “diversity” is a modern-day buzzword and is often used to mean many different things. Even for the “experts” defining diversity can be complicated. This study of human resource and diversity officers explores not only the meaning of “diversity,” but also the attributes and practices that go into the practice of diversity.

- Diversity not only affects our interpersonal relationships; it can also influence an organization’s bottom line in many ways. One example is a study that shows that companies with the most ethnically/culturally diverse boards worldwide are 43% more likely to experience higher profits. This study of 346 companies across the United States and the United Kingdom highlights exactly how diversity impacts the workplace.

- This study highlights not just the value of diversity existing, but the key element of valuing diversity. The authors explored the process of diverse groups in which team members were positively affirmed by their teammates (what the authors call positive interpersonal congruence). When positive interpersonal congruence takes place there is reduced interpersonal conflict and an increase in creative task performance.

- In June 2018, Forbes Magazine published this article citing a study that found “diverse companies produce 19% more revenue.” The implication is that diverse companies allow for diverse teams with diverse approaches to problem-solving. After reading the article, think about a time when you have been a part of a diverse team. What went well? What didn’t go well? How do you think diversity helped and/or contributed to the team?
