Art and creative expression is not only a reflection of culture, but it also helps to shape culture. Thelma Golden, the curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, gives a TEDx talk around this interesting dynamic between the artist, creative expression, and culture.

- Art can express things that sometimes seem indescribable. The environmental activist movement has historically struggled to engage with people who are outside of the science community. Artists, however, are using their art as a means of engaging with cultures and communities and getting outsiders invested in their cause.

- This article redefines the traditional understanding of art from an anthropological view; the authors reframe art as a participatory activity rather than objects to observe. They describe art as pieces of culture that “make society,” rather than just merely aesthetic material. They use examples to highlight art that has a lasting, significant influence on humans: art structures that allow people to gather, or art that invites conversation, and art that helps to guide social behaviors.
