Much of the research on sex offenses against children has focused on male perpetrators. Burgess-Proctor et al. (2017) demonstrate that research should also focus on female perpetrators and identify important differences in this crime based on sex. This article addresses the importance of focusing on sociodemographic factors in the treatment of sexual offenses against children.

Dwyer et al. (2020) discuss the use of police liaison programs for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) in Australia. This article explores reasons that LGBTI individuals may not use these liaisons and recommends improvements to the program. This article discusses a population that is overrepresented within the criminal justice system, both in the U.S. as well as other countries and explores issues that are present when attempting to improve relationships between law enforcement and minoritized communities.

Evangelist et al. (2017) identify youths most at risk of disparate treatment within the juvenile justice system based on race, gender, and age. This article details another forensic population – the juvenile justice population – in which individuals are treated differently based on sociodemographic factors.

Sarrett, J.C., & Ucar, A. (2021). Beliefs about and perspectives of the criminal justice system of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A qualitative study. Social Sciences and Humanities Open, 3(1).
Sarrett and Ucar (2021) interviewed individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DDs) regarding their interactions with the criminal justice system. People with I/DDs represent a population that experiences disproportionately negative experiences in the criminal justice system as both victims and offenders. Recommendations for reducing these negative experiences are proposed.

This report details the rates of crime from 2014 - 2018 based on crime type as well as percentages related to race and sex. These figures provide the foundation for understanding the variations in criminal involvement based on two important sociodemographic characteristics.
