Chance plays an important role in career development. Stanford Professor John D. Krumboltz developed the theory of “planned happenstance” with Al Levin and Kathleen Mitchell which is the concept that arbitrary events have important influence on people’s lives. This paper describes a study that was conducted to develop and initially evaluate the psychometric properties of the Planned Happenstance Career Inventory (PHCI), which aimed to assess skill in using chance events to develop career opportunities.
