Because of their ubiquity, this article reviews the elements of the five-factor personality model (FFM), which still dominates much of the current personality literature in work applications. Each of the FFM factors is introduced and discussed, one at a time. Various definitions of the underlying construct are presented, along with conceptual and foundational issues. Then, the dimensionality and facets of the factor are identified, and career, occupational, and measurement aspects are reviewed.

Research has found that employees high in cooperative and persistent personality traits tend to engage in more contextual performance at work—extra-role behaviors that support and maintain organizational structure. In a between-subjects experiment, this article examined whether descriptions of employees engaged in contextual performance affected inferences about their personality traits and leadership potential. It also examined whether the effects of interpersonal facilitation on perceptions of agreeableness, and perceptions of agreeableness on leadership emergence, were moderated by target employee gender.

There is arguably an obsession with different personality types and their related implications. One can test his or her personality type with a simple or complex quiz such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or any of the thousands of personality quizzes found on social media. There are countless books, DVDs, TED Talks, magazine articles and other forms of media telling you what type of personality will get you ahead in life, and people will go to great lengths to develop what they deem the “ideal” personality. Each of these is examined in this article.

Leadership gurus James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner insisted that “leadership is a relationship.” That relationship depends on trust in the form of credibility. A foundational requirement for leaders to develop credibility and trust is for them first to know and understand themselves. This self-awareness allows a leader to make a better sense of the world around them. Such self-awareness includes the way they take in and process information and why they might have positive interactions with certain people and perceive their interactions more negatively with others.
