This guide describes the many e-book resources available through the NU Library and how to use them.

E-Book Accessibility Information

Credo Reference

It is a priority for Credo that our system is accessible to all types of users, and we have designed Credo Online Reference Service to be used by people with disabilities.

Credo is committed to compliance with disability aids, such as screen readers. Specific elements have been put in place to aid visually-impaired users:

  • Credo Online Reference Service has hyperlinks specifically placed to enable users with screen readers to skip common navigation elements of our pages and jump to a page's main content (visible only to Screenreader tools)
  • We've created a narrative sitemap that describes pages within Credo Online Reference Service to users who cannot see them
  • The Credo Online Reference Service platform provides text equivalents for images, charts and graphs.

Keyboard Navigation

Credo Online Reference Service has been designed to be used with either keyboard or mouse controls. Here's how to operate the various features of Credo Online Reference Service using only the keyboard.

Tab and Shift-Tab Keys

The tab (and shift-tab) keys allow you to move to each link or form element. As you press tab, the focus will move forward through the links. Shift-tab will move backwards. The last tab stop will cycle back to the first tab stop as you keep pressing tab. In a screenreader, the first link on any page will be a "Skip to Content" page. 

Information overlays (such as book and entry summaries) that are normally shown when hovering the mouse over a book or entry link are also shown when the link receives focus via the tab key. When a link has focus, press enter to follow the link. Some links in Credo Online Reference Service are actions that are performed within the page being shown, for example links that expand or contract a hierarchical display of other links.

Form Elements

When focus is on a checkbox, press spacebar to toggle the check.

When focus is on a selection list, such as the subject selections offered on the search form, use the up or down arrow keys to change the selection.

When focus is on a radio button group, the left or right arrow keys will move the selected button.

Mind Map

The Mind Map is a graphical presentation of important terms related to a search term. The map contains a set of linked term "nodes." Each node is connected to other nodes that are related to that node. After doing a Mind Map search, the page will show a graphical user interface for manipulating the map. The Mind Map can be operated with the following key commands.

Use Tab to navigate through the node list. Enter selects a new node, which will re-draw the map. Navigating to the entry list on the right allows a user to select a reference entry related to the node at the center of the map.

Ebook Central

Ebook Central is designed for patrons with accessibility needs, particularly the blind and visually impaired. We are:

  • Targeting AA conformance level to W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) for features and functions
  • Certifying for use with major screen readers (JAWS and VoiceOver)
  • Formatting book content to be readable online and offline
  • Working with third-party specialists in accessibility

Patrons using a screen reader may turn on accessibility mode themselves – no librarian or tech support needed!

For patrons who don’t use a screen reader but have accessibility needs, accessibility mode can be requested for their account at ebooksupport@proquest.com.

EBSCOhost

EBSCO is committed to a positive experience for all users. Accessibility is a key consideration in all our product development strategies.

Improving User Experience for All Users

EBSCO invests time and resources to provide all users with access to our products. We maintain relationships with several consultancies that periodically test and review the accessibility of our products. In addition, we work with customers and conduct EBSCO user research to support accessibility. Our commitments include:

IGI Global

IGI Global's InfoSci platform is accessible to users with disabilities, including keyboard-only users and those with visual and cognitive impairments. The platform is also responsive, meaning users can easily adjust font size and color/contrast settings on most devices. We have made every effort to ensure that our image-based PDF files are accessible and can be read with screen readers like JAWS. These files are tagged at a high level using an automated process.

IGI Global uses automated checks and tests with users against Section 508 and WCAG standards to evaluate and measure the accessibility of the site. A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is available upon request.

PsychiatryOnline

Any portion of PsychiatryOnline content may be transcribed into Braille script, enlarged type, or other appropriate versions. To submit a request for a specific text we recommend you contact PsychiatryOnline via the NU Disability Services office.

SAGE

SAGE is committed to providing an equal opportunity for all to benefit from our products and strives to reduce barriers to delivering educational content on a timely basis to all customers by:

  • routinely assessing and planning for iterative enhancements to improve the accessibility of our online platforms. To request platform-specific accessibility documentation, please email online.accessibility@sagepub.com.
  • supplying free PDF/e-files, provided the requestor individual owns at least one print or ebook version. Proof of ownership may be requested.  If we do not have the PDF/e-file in-house we shall exercise commercially reasonable efforts to have the content digitized at no cost to the requestor. To submit a request for a specific text we recommend you contact SAGE via the NU Disability Services office. Please email: accessrequest@sagepub.com. Inquiries are addressed promptly, often within five working days.

SAGE also works closely with the AccessText Network, Bookshare, RNIB Bookshare, and others in disseminating content for accessibility enhancement. Customers are encouraged to check with those organizations before contacting SAGE.

Listening to E-Books

Credo Reference

You may listen to or download the MP3 of article by clicking on the Listen icon, as shown below.

Ebook Central

Ebook Central does not provide an integrated text-to-speech function but the text-to-speech software TorTalk is compatible.

EBSCOhost

EBSCOhost does not provide audio options for e-books since they are in PDF format. However, if you locate HTML articles, a Listen button will appear on either the side navigation or at the beginning of the full-text section.

IGI Global

IGI Global does not provide an integrated text-to-speech function, but has made every effort to ensure that image-based PDF files are accessible and can be read with screen readers like JAWS.

PsychiatryOnline

PsychiatryOnline does not provide an integrated text-to-speech function.

SAGE

SAGE Knowledge, SAGE Navigator and SAGE Research Methods do not provide an integrated text-to-speech function.

Changing Language

Credo Reference

To change the language display in the Credo Reference interface, click on the language drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner, as shown below. Note: This will change only the navigation and display language in the database, not the language for the content of the e-books. To change the e-book language, see the instructions below.

To translate your article into 60 supported languages, click on the translation tool above your article and select your language, as shown below.

Ebook Central

To change the language display in Ebook Central, click on the Settings drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner and then select Language. This will open to a page that allows you to select you language, as shown below. Note: This will change only the navigation and display language in the database, not the language for the content of the e-books. To change the e-book language, see the instructions below.

To change the language of the e-books, you will first need to select a chapter or page number range and download the PDF. See the Downloading E-Books page for details. Next, you may use Google Translate to translate the e-book content within the PDF. For instructions, see the Google Translate FAQ.

EBSCOhost

To change the language of the interface:

  1. Hover your pointer over Language on the top toolbar on the interface.
    The drop-down menu of available languages appears.

  2. Select by clicking on the desired language in the list.
    The interface is refreshed and translated into the selected language.

You can set your default language to any of the languages listed above, and the next time you sign in to My EBSCOhost, the screens will display in your selected language.

To set a default language preference:

  1. Sign in to My EBSCOhost.

  2. From your search screen or Result List, click the Preferences link that appears below the Find field.

  3. In the General Settings area, select your language from the drop-down list

  4. Click Save.

To change the language for the e-book content:

To change the language of the e-books, you will first need to select and download the PDF e-book chapter. See the Downloading E-Books page for details. Next, you may use Google Translate to translate the e-book content within the PDF. For instructions, see the Google Translate FAQ.

IGI Global

PsychiatryOnline does not provide an integrated translation feature. However, there are no restrictions on copying/pasting content from PsychiatryOnline. Therefore, we suggest copying/pasting content into a Word document and then using Google Translate to translate your content. For instructions, see the Google Translate FAQ.

 

SAGE

SAGE Knowledge, SAGE Navigator and SAGE Research Methods do not provide an integrated translation feature. To change the language of the e-books, you will first need to select and download the PDF book chapter. See the Downloading E-Books page for details.
