Ethical Issues and Responsibilities in International and Global Education

Lesson 2 Resources

Required Resources / Curated OER

Education as an Ethical Concern in the Global Era
Arnove, R., & Bull, B. L. (2015). Education as an ethical concern in the global era. FIRE: Forum for International Research in Education, 2(2), 76–87.
This article provides an excellent overview of the ethical issues in education in a global era, including the education of all and the education of girls specifically. The reading is crucial to enhance your understanding of this week's core concepts.

Cultural Relativism and Universal Human Rights
Donnelly, J. (1984, November 1). Cultural relativism and universal human rights. Human Rights Quarterly, 6(4), 400.
This seminal article on the debate on cultural relativism presents arguments on the competing claims of universal human rights and cultural relativism. Understanding this continuum will aid you in refining your opinions for this week's case study.

Bringing Ethics into the Classroom: Making a Case for Frameworks, Multiple Perspectives and Narrative Sharing
Mathur, S. R., & Corley, K. M. (2014). Bringing ethics into the classroom: Making a case for frameworks, multiple perspectives and narrative sharing. International Education Studies, 7(9), 136–147.
You will read pp. 136-140 for this lesson and finish the article in Module 4, Lesson 7, when you work on your normative case creation. As you read, you will see five frameworks of ethics that apply specifically to education. These are very similar to the six lenses in the previous module and offer another way to examine the most widely accepted ethics paradigms.  Either framework is fine to use in your analysis, as they all relate to ways to view theories of ethics and provide multiple ethical lenses through which educators can view issues and understand perspectives.

Optional Resources

The Ethics of Teaching, 5th Edition: Vol. Fifth edition
Kenneth Strike, & Jonas F. Soltis. (2009). The Ethics of Teaching, 5th Edition: Vol. Fifth edition. Teachers College Press.
If you would like more background on the nature of ethical thinking or its application to issues in U.S. schools, this book provides a wealth of information. It is suggested that you start with the overview on pp. 5-9 and then use the Table of Contents to find case studies of interest to you. These will provide a strong understanding of the case study approach, which will be useful in the assignment for this lesson and the signature assignment.
