In this chapter, the authors discuss the ongoing nature of change in healthcare, an industry that experiences incremental change regularly, and occasionally undergoes monumental change. Small changes include updates to health laws and regulations, including modifications in how privacy and informed consent issues are handled. Large changes include sweeping technological advances such as telehealth, new changes in how procedures are coded and billed, and shifts in reimbursement, such as the Affordable Care Act. There is a special emphasis on the impact of technology and how healthcare leaders must adapt to these changes to remain successful. After completing this chapter, reflect on strategies managers can use to remain flexible and accountable so they can steer their organizations through times of change.
