Identifying Academic Integrity Violations

Academic integrity is a crucial aspect for students and faculty. The University is committed to creating an environment in which students and faculty are held to a standard of excellence for their academic contributions. We believe that holding ourselves and each other accountable in terms of academic integrity is essential to fulfilling our mission as an institution.

The purpose of academic integrity is to guarantee the knowledge pools of each academic field are not contaminated by incorrect or unsubstantiated information. All written work must be accurate and original. The University's students and faculty must carefully ensure their writing is distinct from the writing of others. Every day—every discussion post, every assignment, and every dissertation document must be thoroughly supported by citing scholars (past or active in the field currently), verifiable government sources, the law, or personal communications.

The University uses turnitin® as a tool to help faculty identify instances of possible plagiarism. Reports are generated when the tool is activated or linked to assignments in the learning management system. To determine whether or not to report an Academic Integrity Violation, follow the four AIV steps outlined in this guide.

Please note: The Artificial Intelligence (AI) detection software tool in Turnitin (and other AI detectors) is unreliable. The score alone is not an indication that AI was used to create the writing and can not be used to charge a student with an Academic Integrity Violation (AIV).
